April 13, 2024 Empowering Women and Girls: Our "I Am Woman" Event Celebrating Womanhood and Empowerment Friends of the Children New York recently hosted the highly anticipated "I Am Woman" event, a celebration of womanhood and empowerment that brought together youth, mentors, and caregivers. Held in our Harlem Clubhouse, the event aimed to uplift and inspire through various activities centered around self-care, strength, and creativity. Fitness and Leadership Attendees had the opportunity to participate in multiple sessions of Zumba and yoga, led by passionate instructors who infused the activities with energy and enthusiasm. Notably, one of our dedicated Friends, Reina, led the dynamic Zumba sessions, showcasing our commitment to empowering women to take leadership roles within their communities. Beauty and Self-Expression Another highlight of the event was a hands-on class focused on creating personalized hair oils, led by one of our caregivers, Vakeela Wilson, who is also the CEO and founder of "I Am H.A.I.R. Beauty Class." This session not only taught attendees about hair care but also empowered them to express themselves and embrace their unique beauty. Providing Support and Understanding The event also emphasized inclusivity and support for all women and girls by providing individualized period product bags. These bags, tailored to the specific needs of younger girls, older girls, and caregivers, ensured that everyone had access to essential menstrual hygiene products, promoting dignity and comfort for all attendees. In addition to empowering all of the women and girls present, the event also had an impact on all of male achievers present. This event provided an opportunity for them to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences and challenges faced by the women in their lives, fostering a culture of empathy and support. Thank You to Our DonorsThis impactful event was made possible by the generous support of multiple donors who share our commitment to empowering women and girls in our community.
