December 03, 2024 Meet Eva! From Setbacks to Success: Eva’s Story of Resilience and Growth Eva faced multiple challenges, including school bullying, a lack of academic support, and the emotional toll of repeating fifth grade after the loss of her biological mother. These struggles weighed heavily on her confidence and academic performance. With the help of her Friend, Slade, Eva found renewed strength. Through consistent mentorship and the support of her caregiver, Eva was able to rebuild her confidence and academic skills in a safe and encouraging environment. Slade’s guidance extended beyond academics, providing emotional support and offering the positive role model Eva needed. A transformative moment came when Eva proudly shared at the 5K event that she was now helping her younger sister with homework. This marked a testament to her newfound confidence and leadership. Today, Eva is not only thriving academically but also taking on a mentoring role in her family. She is excited to attend a new school and, most recently, has been helping her younger sister learn to read—a reflection of her own growth and the role reversal that has empowered her. Eva's success, both as a student and a supportive sibling, is a direct result of the work we do at Friends of the Children New York. With the right support, encouragement, and mentorship, children like Eva can overcome challenges, rebuild their confidence, and become leaders in their families and communities. Her story is a true reflection of the power of mentorship in creating lasting change.
