Meet Shaunti & Sinyia

A Relationship Truly Built On Love

At Friends of the Children New York, we believe in Building Relationships on Love—relationships grounded in empathy, trust, and unwavering commitment. For Shaunti, a dedicated Friend who has been mentoring Achievers for seven remarkable years, this belief has defined every interaction, conversation, and milestone.

Shaunti currently mentors nine incredible girls, each relationship stretching beyond seven transformative years. Among them is Sinyia, who first met Shaunti when she was just a fifth grader navigating the uncertainties of childhood. Little did either know, they were about to embark on a journey that would profoundly shape both their lives.

Together, they navigated significant life changes—shifting homes, new schools, and the delicate transition from childhood to adolescence. When relationships at home became difficult during her early teen years, it was Shaunti’s gentle guidance that helped bridge the divide between Sinyia and her mom. With patience, empathy, and a commitment to open communication, Shaunti showed them how love could heal misunderstandings and foster growth.

Shaunti has one simple yet powerful rule: Consistency. Always show up, no matter what. Her unwavering presence during tough moments taught Sinyia that she was never alone. This became especially true during the COVID-19 pandemic when tragedy touched Sinyia’s life. Experiencing loss for the first time, Sinyia struggled deeply, grappling with grief she didn’t yet know how to process. Shaunti immediately stepped in, connecting her to crucial mental health resources and supporting her emotionally, every step of the way. Understanding the importance of caregivers in an Achiever’s life, Shaunti also extended her support to Sinyia’s mom, helping her manage her own grief so she could better support her daughter.

Today, thanks to Shaunti’s consistent love, guidance, and encouragement, Sinyia is thriving. She’s graduating high school this year with plans to attend college, majoring in Engineering—a passion she discovered after persevering through challenging years in math, empowered by Shaunti’s constant reassurance.

But perhaps the most inspiring part of their story is how their bond will continue beyond graduation. Together, Shaunti and Sinyia have envisioned a new chapter: Sinyia will return as a math tutor, helping younger Achievers find their own strengths. She’s already excited to give back, embodying the core asset that Shaunti has nurtured throughout their journey—building community, one relationship at a time, through love.

Their story reminds us all of the profound impact mentorship can have—not just in overcoming hardships, but in unlocking potential, creating cycles of giving, and transforming lives through authentic, respectful, and meaningful connections.

At Friends New York, stories like Shaunti and Sinyia’s are why we do what we do—because every child deserves a friend who shows up, no matter what.
