When Storm was just a few months old, she entered the foster care system. While many children in foster care experience multiple placements, Storm's journey unfolded differently.

At only four months old, she was placed with the Story family, who at this point, had not yet been foster parents and had two adult children. When they met Storm for the first time, everything changed.

"Mrs.Story fell in love with Storm the moment she met her," said Slade, Storm's Friend.

What began as a foster placement soon became something much deeper. Storm became the Story family's first and only foster child, joining a household already filled with love, including two adult daughters who welcomed her with open arms.

The legal adoption process took years, but the Story family never wavered. They knew from the beginning that they wanted Storm to be their daughter.

On May 19, 2026, that commitment became official.

For Storm, now six years old, the day marked more than the completion of a legal process—it celebrated a bond that had existed for nearly her entire life.

When Storm joined Friends of the Children New York in 2024, she was paired with her professional mentor, Slade. Their connection was immediate.

"The first thing she said to me was that she liked my dress," Slade recalled. "Then she asked, 'Are you going to be my friend?'"

Since then, Slade has watched Storm continue to grow into a playful, confident, and loving young person, supported every step of the way by a family deeply committed to her well-being.

"Everything the Story family does for Storm is intentional," Slade shared. "You can see how much they love her."

One meaningful decision the family made was preserving Storm's connection to her past. When the adoption became official, they chose to keep her last name, Hemingway, as part of her full name: Storm Hemingway Story.

It was a way to honor her story while celebrating the next chapter.
