Summer Reading Challenge
Achievers Across Friends New York Rise to the Occasion
While school was out for the summer, our Achievers at Friends of the Children – New York were hard at work—reading, learning, and exceeding expectations through our Read to Rise Summer Challenge, made possible by the generous support of our partner Education Comes First (ECF).Over the course of six weeks, 59 Achievers participated in this literacy-focused enrichment program designed to combat summer learning loss, build confidence, and foster a lifelong love of reading. Results That Speak Volumes:
- 694 books read across all participants
- 81% of Achievers completed the full 12-book reading challenge
- Nearly all participants read at least 10 books
- 86% of Achievers had perfect attendance over 11 program days
Mentors implemented themed reading logs, phonemic games, group story sessions, and milestone celebrations to keep momentum high and motivation strong. Many Achievers began reading aloud to one another, proudly tracking their progress, and taking ownership of their learning.
“We saw them reading to each other by the third week—there was pride in finishing a book, not just being read to.”
— Friends of the Children — New York Mentor

Thanks to ECF’s support, the Read to Rise challenge wasn’t just a summer program—it was a movement that turned downtime into a season of growth.
