Ms. Makeba’s journey with Friends of the Children New York began when her son, Eric, was in kindergarten. Since then, she has enrolled her daughter, Legacy, who is now in first grade. The support and mentorship her family has received from the organization has been life-changing for them all.

A proud mother of five, Makeba is deeply committed to her family. She shares, “I love being a mother, motherhood has changed my life and has made me a better person.” From Harlem, she loves basketball, traveling, enjoying good food, and making memories with her children.

Personal Impact

Friends of the Children New York has provided more than just mentoring for her children—it has become a pillar of support for Makeba herself. Through the program, she’s found a safe and welcoming space where her role as a mother is uplifted, not overlooked. The support Makeba receives from Friends has helped lighten the load of parenting, giving her space to care for herself without having to do everything alone.

She describes the program as a “big sister/big brother” type of support system—an outlet her family can rely on for safety, emotional care, and encouragement. Friends of the Children New York has offered a haven for her children to grow mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Makeba has seen noticeable shifts in her children’s empathy, confidence, and sense of purpose. They feel more capable of reaching their goals and facing life’s challenges with resilience.

The care extends beyond just Eric and Legacy—the program has embraced her entire family. When her youngest child, Greatness, was born, the Friends of the Children New York staff came together to throw her a baby shower, exemplifying the deep community connection and holistic support the organization provides.

Eric’s Growth

The impact on her children has been just as profound. Eric, now 17 and a junior in high school, has shown tremendous growth, especially in his communication skills. He’s become more eager to participate in events and has even expressed interest in becoming a Friend himself.

Recently, Eric joined The Possibility Project, a program that brought together 12 teens from across New York City to explore personal challenges through writing and performance. As part of the project, Eric helped develop an original play that wove together each participant's experiences. Makeba shared that the experience sparked a new passion in him—he now wants to continue writing and performing in the future.

Legacy’s Light

Legacy, age seven, is thriving as well. She enjoys drawing, singing, dancing, and is now exploring gymnastics. Makeba has seen a growing confidence in her daughter—she’s becoming more expressive and free, showing a blossoming sense of self. Legacy will be highlighted at the 2025 Step Up Gala, where her journey and development through the program will be celebrated as a reflection of her hard work and the support she’s received.

Looking To The Future

Looking ahead, Makeba hopes her children will lead full and successful lives, free from limitations. She wants them to always strive for their dreams, live with love, and not let the world determine what success is. She teaches them to stay true to themselves, saying, “Don’t become what you hate. Contribute love, travel, and shine always no matter what you’re going through.”

For parents considering joining Friends of the Children New York, Makeba offers heartfelt advice: “You will be safe, you will be loved and supported, and you will gain an extended family. This is a place for you and your child to grow and flourish properly.”

Ms. Makeba’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when consistent support and intentional mentorship meet a parent’s love and resilience. Her family’s journey embodies our mission—and illustrates the heart of our work.
