Literacy Built *Samantha's Confidence

How Books Helped Her Grow As A Reader & As A Person

When *Samantha first began working with her Friend, Josiely, she was shy and kind, often hesitant to try new things. She preferred familiarity, sticking to the same things and routines that felt safe. Speaking up did not come easily and new experiences were something she often avoided. *Samantha struggled to express her feelings and often kept her thoughts to herself, unsure of how to navigate challenges in her daily life.

Reading was gradually introduced as part of their regular outings together. Books were incorporated into everyday activities, from reading menus at restaurants to choosing books to bring along on outings. Early on, *Samantha moved from small picture books to chapter books, eagerly exploring new stories. One day, when Josiely offered to read to her, *Samantha thanked her but said she would rather read aloud herself. From that moment on, *Samantha began confidently choosing books to read to her Friend, taking the lead in her own learning.

As *Samantha’s reading skills improved, the effects rippled into every part of her life. Literacy gave her the words to explain her thoughts and feelings, helping her express herself and advocate for what she needs. Tackling books above her reading level showed her that she could accomplish difficult tasks, building her confidence and resilience. She began seeking out stories about emotions, friendships, confidence, and self growth, using reading as a tool to problem solve and navigate real life. Literacy also supported her willingness to try new places and healthier food options, showing her that learning could empower her in all areas of life.

Reading milestones became moments of pride. Getting her own library card gave *Samantha independence and access to books she did not have at home. She celebrated her achievements by clapping for herself, giving herself stickers, and talking openly about her progress. This confidence extended beyond reading. *Samantha learned to speak up when her feelings were hurt and to embrace her interests even when others did not understand them. Through literacy, *Samantha not only became a top student in her class and grade, but also grew into a confident, self-assured young person ready to take on challenges.

*Samantha’s story shows that literacy is more than learning to read. It is about self-expression, problem solving, and the courage to use your voice. This end of year, your support makes stories like *Samantha’s possible.
