Meet our Friend, Steven!
Where consistency, trust, and intentional mentoring come together.
Our Friend Steven is a professional mentor at Friends of the Children – New York, where he builds long-term, one-to-one relationships with Achievers rooted in consistency, trust, and intention.
Steven became a mentor to help fill gaps that traditional systems often leave behind, supporting youth with practical life skills, healthy decision-making, and exposure to new experiences. As a professional mentor, Steven has the flexibility to tailor each outing to an Achiever’s individual goals, whether that means focusing on fitness, financial literacy, or building confidence through games like chess.
One of Steven’s most impactful moments was supporting his Achiever Angel on a health and wellness journey. Together, they committed to a strength and conditioning routine, practiced soccer skills near the Bronx clubhouse, and made more intentional food choices. Through discipline and consistency, Angel lost 20 pounds and gained confidence, a powerful reflection of what long-term mentoring makes possible.
For Steven, the most rewarding part of the work is seeing progress over time. When Achievers stick with the plans they’ve built together, it shows trust, growth, and belief in themselves. And while the work is intentional, it’s also filled with joy — from Jenga and basketball games to shared laughter during outings at the Harlem office.
Steven strives to model strong decision-making for his Achievers. He believes it’s one of the most important life skills a young person can develop, a foundation that shapes every choice and opportunity ahead.
This is the power of professional mentoring — 12+ years, no matter what.
This National Mentoring Month, we celebrate the dedication and impact of mentors like Steven helping shape brighter futures for the youth of New York City!
