January 06, 2025 Meet our Friend, Latoya! Her Journey from Educator to Empowering Mentor For over 15 years, Latoya’s career has been dedicated to shaping young minds and empowering adolescents. Starting as an information technology teacher in the Virgin Islands, she spent five years inspiring students there. She then transitioned into teaching English in secondary school for a decade, further solidifying her passion for working with youth. When she returned to New York, Latoya’s love for mentoring deepened. Teaching was fulfilling, but it was mentorship that truly resonated with her purpose. "The satisfaction gained when I am able to connect with my Achievers is one of my greatest treasures," she shared. As a Friend, Latoya embraces the unique opportunity to provide one-on-one support to Achievers. She believes mentoring goes beyond academic guidance; it’s about helping young people build a strong foundation for the future. "This journey into mentorship has been an exciting and fulfilling one. Being able to have uninterrupted time with each Achiever is as beneficial to them as it is for me. Mentoring for me is not just guiding achievers to academic success but it is a stepping stone to aiding them to a successful emotional, social and holistic future." This National Mentoring Month, we celebrate the dedication and impact of mentors like Latoya—helping shape brighter futures for the youth of New York City!
