Londyn’s Growth, Page by Page

How Persistence & Patience Opened New Doors

When Londyn first entered the Friends of the Children — New York program, he was a quiet, observant kid who preferred to stay in the background. His Friend, Henry, remembers how carefully he watched the world around him, taking his time before speaking and choosing his words with intention. Even then, Henry noticed the spark: a mind that was always processing, always curious.

Over time, that spark has grown into confidence. Today, Londyn asks questions and shares ideas with pride. He is more willing to take risks and more comfortable expressing himself, and his growing belief in his own abilities has transformed the way he learns.

Much of this progress came from simple but powerful consistency. Henry focused on regular reading sessions where they broke down concepts into manageable parts and celebrated even the smallest wins. He gave Londyn choice in what they read, which helped him feel ownership over his learning and turned reading into something enjoyable rather than intimidating.

Londyn loves adventure stories, mysteries, superhero tales, and books with both humor and heart. He has also begun exploring longer and more challenging reads. His motivation is strong: he even gets frustrated sometimes when he wants to read at the same level as his fifth-grade reading partner, which Henry sees as a sign of his determination to grow.

One moment stands out as a turning point. Londyn picked a book that was above his comfort level and said, “I want to try it anyway.” He struggled at first, but he stayed with it. When he finished the final chapter, the pride on his face told the whole story. It wasn’t just about completing a book; it was about realizing what he is capable of.

This year, Londyn was even invited to the Gifted and Talented Program at another school. Even though he ultimately stayed at his current school, it was still an amazing milestone that reflects both his hard work and his potential.

That growth shows up far beyond his school performance too. Londyn communicates more clearly, asks deeper questions, shows more patience, and engages with the world around him with curiosity. His work with Henry has given him a safe place to try and make mistakes, building his confidence step by step.

Henry believes Londyn’s habits are what set him apart: persistence, curiosity, and a willingness to try again even when something feels difficult. They celebrate progress with high-fives, shout-outs, special book choices, and moments of reflection on how far he has come.

If Henry had to describe his journey in one word, it would be “becoming” because every step reveals more of who Londyn is: confident and capable, with a future that grows bigger with every page he turns.
